Lübeck City Theatre

The earliest of the site was in 1302, when the first building was erected here. In 1752 the first public theatre of Lübeck was constructed here by Johann Heinrich Schröder, a master carpenter. From 1774 to 1857 it was known as the “Ebbe’sche Haus”, named after its owner, who staged not only plays here, but also put on concerts and masquerades.

In 1857 the building was demolished by Casino Aktiengesellschaft, to be replaced by a playhouse with larger facilities for balls and concerts. It closed in 1905 due to lack of attendance. Today’s distinguished art nouveau building was erected between 1908 and 1909. The “Stadttheater” has been a listed building since 1967, a status that was confirmed in 1992.
